You walk into the practice. The smell of disinfectant. The sound of the drill from the next room. Your heart races. You want to turn around and leave.
Sound familiar? One in five people in Germany avoids the dentist out of fear. There's a name for this. dental phobia (or dentophobia). And it's not a weakness. It's one of the most common phobias in the world.
One of my patients hadn't been to the dentist in 14 years. Fourteen. She came in with acute pain. when it was no longer bearable. Three teeth couldn't be saved. But do you know what she said after the treatment? "If I'd known they treat you like THIS now. I would have come ten years ago."
Here are 7 ways to overcome dental anxiety. from the simplest to the more serious.
7 Ways to Overcome Dental Phobia
Tell the dentist: "I'm scared"
Two words that change everything. When the dentist knows about your anxiety, they'll slow down, explain each step, and give you a stop signal: raise your hand and everything stops. There's nothing to be ashamed of. Dentists hear this every day. And they work with extra care for patients who say this.
First visit. no treatment
You don't need to sit in the chair right away. The first visit can simply be a conversation: you meet the dentist, look around the practice, ask questions. No instruments, no procedures. In Germany this is called a Beratungsgespräch. a consultation that is fully covered by GKV health insurance.
Ask the dentist to explain every step
Dental anxiety intensifies when you don't understand what's happening. "Now there will be cold water", "you'll feel slight pressure". when the dentist warns you in advance, your brain stops panicking. In Germany you have the right to know everything being done to you. This isn't just a request. it's the law.
Forget everything you remember about anaesthesia
If your last visit was 10+ years ago. that dentistry and today's are two completely different worlds. Modern anaesthesia takes effect in 2 minutes. Even the injection itself can be made painless using a numbing gel on the gum beforehand. That same patient who hadn't come for 14 years said after her treatment: "I didn't feel anything at all. Nothing."
Bring headphones
The sound of the drill is trigger number one for dental anxiety. The solution is simple: headphones with music or a podcast. Many practices in Hamburg offer this themselves. The brain cannot simultaneously listen to favourite music and panic. Tried and tested.
Laughing gas sedation (Lachgas)
For those for whom the previous methods haven't helped. there's Lachgas (nitrous oxide, laughing gas). You inhale nitrous oxide, stay conscious, but feel completely relaxed. The fear disappears, time flies. Five minutes after the procedure you already feel normal. This is not general anaesthesia. It's gentle sedation, safe and proven over decades. Ask your dentist whether they offer Lachgas.
Go regularly. the fear will fade on its own
The paradox of dental phobia: the longer you avoid going. the scarier it gets. The scarier it gets. the more problems pile up. The more problems. the more complex the treatment. Break the cycle. A preventive check-up (Vorsorgeuntersuchung) takes 20 minutes and is pain-free. GKV covers two visits per year. After the third visit, the fear starts to fade on its own.
Conclusion: Dental anxiety is not a life sentence
Fear of the dentist is not a life sentence. It's a habit that can be changed. Thousands of people in Germany take that first step every single day.
