A dental splint or mouthguard (German: Zahnschiene or Aufbissschiene) is a removable device made of transparent plastic that fits over the teeth. Depending on the purpose, there are several types.

Types of dental splints

1

Night guard for bruxism (Aufbissschiene)

Protects teeth from grinding damage. Distributes bite forces evenly and relieves strain on the TMJ (temporomandibular joint). GKV covers fabrication when bruxism is diagnosed.

2

Sports mouthguard (Sportmundschutz)

Protects teeth during contact sports (boxing, ice hockey, basketball). Custom-made guards from a dentist fit far better than over-the-counter versions and absorb impact more effectively.

3

Clear aligners

Transparent trays for straightening teeth. An alternative to braces for mild to moderate misalignment. Changed every 1-2 weeks. In Germany, this is a private service.

4

Retainer

Worn after orthodontic treatment to prevent teeth from shifting back. Usually at night for several years.

Caring for your mouthguard

Care instructions

🪥 Rinse with cool water after every use

🧼 Clean daily with a soft brush (no toothpaste, it scratches)

📦 Store in a ventilated case, not a sealed bag

🌡 Never place in hot water: the guard will warp

🔄 Bring it to every dental visit so the fit can be checked
