What is a dental implant. simply explained
A dental implant is a small titanium element that the dentist places directly into the jawbone. It becomes an artificial tooth root. On top of it goes an abutment (connector piece) and a ceramic crown that looks and functions exactly like a natural tooth.
No removable dentures, no clasps on neighbouring teeth. just a fixed, aesthetically pleasing restoration.
How the treatment works: step by step
Consultation and diagnostics
The dentist examines you, takes a panoramic X-ray and a digital cone beam CT (DVT/CT) for 3D treatment planning.
Preparation
If bone volume is insufficient, bone grafting is performed first (3–6 months healing time).
Implant placement
The procedure is done under local anaesthesia and takes 30–90 minutes. Sutures heal within 7–10 days.
Osseointegration
The bone grows around the implant. Lower jaw: 2–4 months, upper jaw: 3–6 months.
Abutment and impression
After integration, the connector piece is attached and an impression is taken for the crown.
Crown fitting
After 1–2 weeks, the permanent ceramic crown is ready and fitted.
From first appointment to finished tooth: 3–9 months. The timeline depends on whether bone grafting is needed and your individual healing speed.

Dental implant insurance Germany. what does GKV pay?
Dental implants are not part of the standard GKV benefit catalogue. The statutory health insurance pays a fixed subsidy. Festzuschuss. equivalent to what it would pay for a bridge. This amounts to roughly 530–700 €.
Exceptions where GKV covers implants in full: complete tooth loss, congenital aplasia, consequences of cancer treatment or severe trauma. A specialist report is required in these cases.
Private insurance (PKV) and supplemental dental insurance
PKV (private health insurance) covers implants substantially better. between 60% and 100% depending on your plan.
A Zahnzusatzversicherung (supplemental dental policy) on top of GKV can cover up to 100% of implant costs, but there is a waiting period of 6–8 months from the date the policy starts. Take out the insurance before any dental problems arise. otherwise the implant will not be covered.
Success rate and lifespan
10-year survival rate: 95–98%. With proper care and regular dental check-ups, an implant can last 20–30 years or longer.
Key factors: thorough oral hygiene, not smoking, regular professional cleaning and early treatment of gum inflammation.
When a dental implant is NOT recommended
- Uncontrolled diabetes (HbA1c above 8%)
- Active heavy smoking (10+ cigarettes per day)
- Bisphosphonate medication (osteoporosis treatment)
- Radiation therapy to the head or neck
- Insufficient bone volume (requires prior augmentation)
- Minors (patients under 18)
