The tongue is the largest bacterial reservoir in the mouth. Its surface is covered with papillae, between which bacteria, food particles, and dead cells accumulate. Studies show that 60-80% of halitosis (bad breath) cases are linked to tongue coating.

How to clean your tongue properly

Tongue cleaning is best done in the morning, before breakfast.

  1. Stick your tongue out as far as possible.
  2. Place the scraper or brush on the back third of the tongue.
  3. Pull forward 3-5 times, rinsing the tool after each stroke.
  4. Do not press too hard.

Scraper or toothbrush?

Tongue scraper (Zungenreiniger): removes coating more effectively than a toothbrush. Available in stainless steel, copper, or plastic.

Toothbrush: the textured back pad can be used, but is less effective than a scraper.

White tongue coating: when to see a dentist

A thin white coating is normal. A thick coating that does not come off, colour changes, or painful spots are reasons to see a dentist. These may be linked to candidiasis, antibiotic use, or dehydration.

Tongue and overall oral health

Bacteria on the tongue contribute to plaque formation and gingivitis. A tongue scraper costs very little and is available at any pharmacy (Apotheke) or drugstore (dm, Rossmann) in Germany.
